The Influence of Sub-Projectiles Arrangement on Body Strength of 35 mm Shrapnel Projectile

Abstract

The subject of the paper is the investigation of shrapnel arrangement influence on projectile housing strength. The finite element method was used to calculate the distributions of stress in the missile body. The four alternative designs of sub-projectiles lay-out were presented: circular-symmetric and polygonal. The numerical calculation of body strength was presented for the chosen arrangements without central sub-projectile. The equivalent stress which was generated by sub-projectiles interaction during rotation of the projectile near the contact surface exceeded the yield point of material body by 36% to 56% (for different versions). This stress state should be taken into consideration during modelling of the ammunition disassembly phenomena.
