THE INFLUENCE OF SURFACE GEOMETRICAL STRUCTURE OF STEEL ON THE STATIC FRICTION COEFFICIENT OF POLYMER MATERIALS
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 227, Issue 5
Abstract
A high static friction coefficient means that the static friction resistance plays an important role in the energy consumption during the start-up period. The minimisation of static frictional resistance is an important issue in polymer-metal sliding couples operating under dry friction conditions. There have been four typical polymer sliding materials chosen: − polyamide (PA 6), − polyoxymethylene (POM), − polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and − composite based on PTFE (PTFE + 40 weight % of bronze powder). Depending on the variant of surface roughness and the texture direction of steel counterface, differences in the static friction of polymer material can be observed. Test results show the significant influence of surface geometrical structure (roughness, texture direction) of the steel counterface on the value of the static friction coefficient of polymer materials sliding against steel.

The paper presents an attempt to explain the mechanism of wear in a contact cast iron piston ring/composite cylinder liner analysed at a microscale by using of lamellar model of a pearlite. For calculation of local stres...
THE INFLUENCE OF EQUILIBRIUM QUALITY PARAMETERS OF A SURFACE LAYER ON THE WEAR RESISTANCE OF PARTS
The article describes the processes of hardening and softening of the surface layer of parts in the process of wear during the formation of the equilibrium state of work surfaces of friction units. Based on the energy ap...
HYDROSTATIC THRUST BEARING WITH REDUCED POWER LOSSES
In many cases in rotating machinery, axial load is carried by tilting pad thrust bearings which have been developed since the beginning of 20th century. For high reliability and simplicity, most commonly the bearings are...
INFLUENCE OF FILLERS ON THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF THEIR COMPOSITIONS WITH LUBRICATING GREASES
The paper presents the results of studies on the influence of fillers, introduced into lubricating greases, on the rheological properties of resultant grease compositions. These fillers were graphite and PTFE powders. Th...
INFLUENCE OF ELEVATED TEMPERATURE ON THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF BOUNDARY LAYERS FORMING IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ANTIWEAR ADDITIVE OF VEGETABLE ORIGIN
The effect of temperature on the chemical structure of boundary layers forming on steel surface during friction lubricated by poli-a-olefin oil containing antiwear additive of vegetable origin are investigated. The use o...
