THE INFLUENCE OF THE TYPE OF FILLER IN GREASE ON THE LUBRICATION EFFICIENCY SLIDING STEEL NODES

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 224, Issue 2

Abstract

In the paper, investigations of the influence of the type of filler in grease on lubrication efficiency in steel sliding nodes working in mixed lubrication conditions are presented. The analysed fillers (presenting each solid oil) contents 6 weight percent of 1S automobile grease. In particular disulfide of molybdenum, graphite, trioxide of antymony, cooper, lead, PTFE and POM as the filler were used. The tribological testing was carried out in agreement with the prescriptions of the Polish standard PN-76/C-04147 using a four-ball apparatus. The efficiency of the tested compositions was evaluated using four criteria: ball wear d, limiting wear load G, and seizure load Fz, wear index Ih. The results were statistically handled at a confidence level of 95% using Student’s t-test. Obtained values of wear index Ih, limiting wear load G and characteristics ball wear in function of applied load and seizure load Fz on graph 1, 2 and 3 are presented. It was found that generalisation in relation to the influence of fillers (this same sort of solid oils) on improvement of lubrication efficiency of the tested compositions is impossible. Unequivocal correlation between the connection of the filler with defined sort of solid oils and produced improvement of efficiency does not occur.
