THE INNOVATION OF CZECH PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS OF TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL SEMANTICS IN MODERN USE
Journal Title: Актуальні питання гуманітарних наук: Міжвузівський збірник наукових праць молодих вчених Дрогобицького державного педагогічного університету - Year 2018, Vol 21, Issue 1
Abstract
Following the scientific views of the Polish linguist S. Bomba, the article defines phraseological innovation as any deviation from the phraseological norm treated as a body of phraseological units (PhUs) approved by competent lan- guage users and their usage rules in texts. The phraseological norm is therefore viewed as a body of PhUs approved by a given speech community (reflected in the codification sources) and a set of rules relating to the use of those units. A PhU is accepted in the article as the phraseological norm in terms of the stability of the formal structure, semantics and contextual combinability power of a given PhU. The phraseological context is considered to be a word, a word group, a sentence or a group of sentences displaying semantic unity with a given phraseological unit and realizing its meaning in a conventional or unconventional way. Non-compliance with the lexical and grammatical structure of a PhU as well as the incongruity of the external phraseological features of a PhU (i.e. connected with the context of its use) signifies a deviation from the norm. Czech phraseological units of temporal and spatial semantics undergo numerous transformations in modern use. The article focuses in particular on the analysis of such modifications regarding the change in the structure of a PhU as the expansion of its component structure, component substitution, phraseological derivation and innovations devoid of any changes in the structure of a PhU, i.e. double actualization, expanded metaphors and the extension of the lexical and semantic combinability of PhUs. The expansion of PhU component structure we consider such changes in the structure of PhU, when within it there are words that enter into semantic and grammatical links with the components, rather than PhU in general. Among the phraseological innovations with the component substitution, we distinguish two groups based on the pres- ence or absence of a semantic link between the traditional component and the substitution: the usual component and substitute belong to one semantic field; between the usual component and substitute there is no semantic affinity, they combine only on the basis of figurative phraseological meaning. The most productive among the above-mentioned types of transformations for this PhUs group is the extension of the lexical and semantic combinability of PhUs, associated with the transformation of PhU as a result of the expansion of its lexical compatibility, which causes a change in the traditional meaning of the PhU, without thereby violating its lexical and gramatical composition.
