The inspiration of emerging technologies such as brain-computer interface on conventional surgical treatment for limb function reconstruction
Journal Title: Biomedical Transformation - Year 2020, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Limb paralysis is the main cause of human disability. Hemiplegia caused by stroke alone has affected more than 20 million patients in China, and there is currently no cure for this disease. We created the original contralateral C7 to C7 cross nerve transfer surgery that swapped the link of the brachial nerve of the paralyzed side to the ipsilateral healthy brain. Not only did hemiplegic limb function recover significantly, it also broke the traditional neuroscience theory. However, for patients with limb paralysis or severe limb disability after spinal cord injury, the practicality of traditional medical methods is still facing the doubt of effectiveness. In recent years, interdisciplinary cooperation derived from emerging technologies such as brain-computer interfaces based on the development of traditional EEG technology have gradually risen. They have the potential to solve the prob-lems left over from traditional medicine and have taken a great upsurge at home and abroad. As a national strategic demand, we should seize this opportunity to increase our efforts to support cross-field and multi-disciplinary inte-gration to jointly develop new solutions for limb function reconstruction, and achieve another breakthrough in the integration of emerging technologies and Chinese original technologies.
