Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2012, Vol 8, Issue 2
Abstract
Treatment of patients with hypodontia of lateral incisors, is based on reconstruction of missing teeth in order to obtain improvement of esthetic appearance, mastication and speech. Lateral incisors are the second most common missing permanent teeth. Treatment options account the profile and occlusion. One method of treatment is setting the canines in the place for missing lateral incisors. This type of treatment concerns Angle Class I and II. This type of treatment is not recommended in Class III. The expected outcome of the treatment in patient with Class I and II is to create the optimal closure of the space with natural teeth. The main orthodontic task is positioning the canine in the most esthetically and functional position, while the esthetic dentistry takes care of the appropriate color and shape. Modern solutions of the contemporary dentistry allow patients have the optimal and satisfying esthetic of the front teeth. New achievements in esthetic dentistry and prosthetic can modify shape and color of canines by replacing the missing lateral incisor. The epidemiology and etiology of hypodontia is based on widely known literature. Attention was drawn to the multidisciplinary nature of this type of treatment planning. The article presents the possibilities of treatment leading to proper occlusion, articulation and satisfactory appearance in cases with Angle Class I i II. (Orthod. Forum 2012; 8: 52 - 9).
