The Investigation of Desertification in Desert Areas of Sabzevar Affected By Land Use Change Using GIS and RS

Abstract
Desertification is one of the problems drawing everyone’s attention. Land use change is considered as one of the indicators of desertification. This study investigated the quantity of advance or recession in the area of land affected by land use changes by the extent of 410 000 hectares in the city of Sabzevar. Having been corrected geometrically, Land sat TM digital data relating to the two time series: 20-APR-1987, 13-MAY2001 was used. Out of the integration of frequency bands and composite indexes, and principle components analysis, a band combined of three bands FCC521 was selected as the best combination band. With supervised classification method and with the maximum possible accuracy the maps of the land use change to the area under study were prepared and analyzed. This study shows that nearly 4,600 hectares of lands in both years has been classified as abandoned agricultural lands indicating more favorable agricultural conditions in date before 1987. In contrast, from 1987 to 2001, 3,600 hectares of new agricultural land area has been added.
