Journal Title: İzmir Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2021, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

Tourism employees work in intercultural environments due to the nature of tourism activity. The cultural intelligence level of the person is important in terms of adapting to the job and showing efficient performance. Tourism professionals with high cultural intelligence adapt quickly and easily to the intercultural environment. This situation is an important indicator that the cultural intelligence levels of tourism students who will be employees in the future can be an important factor in adapting to the sector after graduation. Therefore, the research aims to measure the cultural intelligence levels of tourism students who will have to work in a multicultural environment with the longitudinal research method and to determine whether there is a difference over the years. The sample of the study consists of a total of 736 third-year students enrolled in different years of the only tourism faculty located in one of the important destinations of Turkey. The sample was selected by a simple random sampling method. Research data were collected using the cultural intelligence scale. According to the results of the research, it was revealed that the general cultural intelligence levels of the students receiving tourism education were at the average level in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The cultural intelligence levels of 2018 students are higher than in other years. It has been concluded that tourism students should interact with different cultures to increase and develop their cultural intelligence levels. In addition, it has been determined that working in the sector during university years can increase the level of cultural intelligence. Students who complete their tourism education with a high level of cultural intelligence can adapt to the sector faster.
