Abstract

The article examines the way dance is depicted in the epistolary novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther” by Johann Wolfgang Goethe described in the letter of June 16. This letter is an important structural element of the sentimental work’s composition. The study aims at analyzing the function of the depicted dance in the novel’s conception with a focus on the role of dances in the life of the aristocracy of the time. Special attention is paid to the lexis of the thematic field “to dance”, the lexical units and syntactic constructions which visualize the dance rhythm typical of ball culture of the 18th century.
