THE LANGUAGE POLICY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION AND SEARCHING FOR THE MONOLINGUALISM

Abstract
The goal of this study is to put forth the concept of multilingualism, the process of development and the legal basis of multilingualism and searching for the monolingualism among the members of the Union and to analyse and open a discussion on the conflicts between monolingualism and multilingualism expressed that multilingualism is an essential requirement for its democratic legitimacy stated by the European Union. In this study, the development process of multilingualism, the foundations formed in this process, the costs of these foundations, and though having been said that EU supports the multilingualism, particularly the dominance of English, French and German, the reasons for searching the monolingualism and the positive and negative aspects have been dealt.
