The legal status of a witness in the criminal process of Ukraine and foreign states

Abstract
The article is devoted to the investigation of the normative approach to determining the legal status of a witness in criminal procedural legislation of Ukraine and some European states. The author turns to the understanding and meaning of the concept of “legal status”, as well as its constituent elements. Based on the conclusions drawn, the provisions of the procedural codes regarding the definition of the concept, rights and obligations, as well as the responsibility of the witness as a participant in criminal proceedings, are analyzed. The author formes proposals to improve the definition of the concept of a witness in the criminal procedural legislation of Ukraine.
