The level of selected lipids in blood plasma of stallions

Journal Title: Journal of Animal Science, Biology and Bioeconomy - Year 2016, Vol 34, Issue 4

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the impact of selected factors on the concentration levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (ChC), cholesterol high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), cholesterol low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) and free fatty acids (FFA) in blood plasma of stallions. The significance of the impact of factors such as age and race of horses’ lipid levels in blood plasma was determined using multivariate analysis of variance. The significance of differences between means was verified by Tukey test at α = 0.05. The breed of the studied horses significantly affects the level of all lipids, the stallions breed predisposed to ridable usage (the socalled. "Hot-blooded") had higher levels of TG, ChC and LDL-C, and draught stallions (the socalled. "Cold-blooded") had clearly higher levels of FFA in blood plasma. It was observed that the age of the stallions had a significant impact on the level of TG, ChC, LDL-C. The average value of the levels of these lipids in the blood plasma generally decreased with the age of the horses. There was no significant correlation between the age of the tested horses and HDL-C and FFA levels in their blood.
