THE MEANS OF STYLISTIC SYNTAX IN R. WALSER’S NOVEL THE TANNERS

Abstract

The article analyzes peculiarities of the syntactic organization of R. Walser’s novel The Tanners. The functioning of internal monologues, free-indirect speech and transcendental elements that form the narrative structure of the text and determine its monologous character have been taken into consideration. It has been defined that the reproduction of a spontaneous flow of inner speech of the main character Simon, the controversial nature of his thoughts and insecurities in his own judgments lead to the fact that the dominant stylistic quality of the text language is diffusion. On the semantic level, the following stylistic figures such as repetition, enumeration, asyndeton, parallelism, antithesis, and inversion are dominant in the novel. It has been established that accumulation of synonymic vocabulary, contrastive analyses of antonyms, semantically related words or phrases by means of anaphoric repetition, asymmetric enumeration, and lexical-syntactic parallelism in the speech microstructure of the text leads to an expansion and complication of the syntactic structure of the novel. Multicomponent speech has been studied as a stylistic peculiarity of the author’s individual syntax. The structural and intonational peculiarity and semantic-syntactic relations between the protasis and conclusion of a periodic sentence have been analyzed. It has been defined that an individual creative manner of R. Walser is characterized by the implementation of a narrative principle of “poetic chatting” that arises as a result of an intense use of multilevel language units in textual fragments of the novel.
