Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 43
Abstract
Middle voice is one of the most basic and important linguistic categories. Middle voice is not mentioned apart from some studies in Turkish. It causes that their morphosynactic and semantic characteristics are not determined completely. In Turkish middle voice is confused with different linguistic categories such as unaccusative, impersonal passive, especially also reflexive which are same morphosyntactic properties usually. Passive and reflexive are formed in latter periods. However, middle voice is much older and fundamental linguistic category. Today verb forms accepted as reflexive are middle voice verbs which have been used since Old Turkish. In Turkish there are different markers of middle voice and reflexive. As it supposed, there are not two markers of reflexive. Middle voice is marked with verbal affixes –(X)n- ve –(X)l-, while reflexive marked with pronoun kendi and they have different morphosyntactic and semantic structures.
