The Muslim Community in Austria during the Migration Crisis in Europe – Selected Issues
Journal Title: Chorzowskie Studia Polityczne - Year 2016, Vol 11, Issue
Abstract
The size of the Muslim community in Austria is rapidly increasing for decades now. Currently, its share in society reaches 7%, while Islam is the second largest religion in the country after Catholicism. The rapid increase in numbers, combined with the cultural and religious differences is a cause of interest, but also anxiety, resentment, and/or hostility. Negative emotions are growing in an era of an increased influx of refugees and migrants to European countries. The most important research question posed in this article is the question about the impact of such a large number of Muslims in public life and the internal politics of Austria. In this context, it is important what relationship Muslin community has with the majority of society. Is there polarization or integration? This text is an attempt to identify the consequences of the contemporary situation – both for Muslims themselves, as well as, the host country.
