Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
The article is devoted to the social and political activity of the Kharkov nationalistic pupils and students during the First World War. The mentioned category of young people did not have its own standing organization, but took an active part in the activities of cultural organizations (Ukrainian Gymnasium Circles, Ukrainian Club, Ukrainian Student Community), and pioneered the secret youth social and political organization Youth Union. Initially the nationalists sought to unite the youth groups in Kharkiv on the basis of the ideas of the federalism by M.P. Dragomanov, but the attempt was unsuccessful. After the creation of the Youth Union the nationally minded youth were not satisfied with the dominance of the socialist tendencies in the newly-created organization. A small group of associates created the organization called «The Ukrainian Nationalistic Circle». The developers of its program were A.P. Kovalivskyi and V.M. Alekseenko. The activity of the newly created organization was based on the principles of the national aristocracy. The aristocracy was understood as self-respect and respect for others. The program contained the demands of national-territorial autonomy of Ukraine, recognition of Ukrainian as the state language in Ukraine and the creation of public schools with teaching in the Ukrainian language. The proposed ideas did not gain support among the youth of Kharkiv. An unsuccessful attempt to increase the influence of the nationalists on the Youth Union was also made by increasing the number of the nationally conscious self education of the pupils and students clubs. «The Ukrainian Nationalistic Circle» ceased its political activities without starting to function properly in 1916. At the beginning of 1917 there were some strengthening of the nationalistic tendencies among the national youth movement in Kharkiv, but it was interrupted by the February revolution.
