The nurse versus the national system of emergency medical services

Abstract
Introduction. Nursing is a field that encompasses independence, huge responsibility, as well as vast professional knowledge. The way medical emergency services operate requires the employees to possess certain competences or qualifications, essential for saving human lives or health. Aim. Presenting nurses’ role in the national emergency medical services system and pointing to the need of providing professional development of a system nurse. Material. The authors made an analysis of both legal acts and literary sources. Conclusions. The analysis of normative acts or literary sources, as well as the authors’ expertise, allowed to confirm the significance of a nurse performing tasks resulting from professional functions of a nurse in the field of saving human health and life. The current way the Polish national medical emergency system operates provides that the nurse is a leader of a mobile team, as well as being the basis of a specialist team and providing basic medical emergency services. Nurses also perform duties of medical controllers, hospital emergency department nurses, educators in the field of medical emergency operations, providing both qualified first aid and first aid.
