Journal Title: International Journal of Contemporary Management - Year 2011, Vol 10, Issue 1

Abstract

The key issue of the article are factors influencing development of a cities. The author analyzed scholarly literature as well as results of the researches focusing on optimal use of management instruments influencing development of a cities. Among the main objectives of the local development one may distinguish, among others, creation of an institution for local development, development of alternative products and services, development of human and social capital, the search for markets, transfer and diffusion of knowledge and technology as well as the use of local resources. The classification of cities based on the population leads to a conclusion that the big cities possess more than 100 thousand inhabitants. The criteria for the distinguishing of large cities are diverse. In the Polish reality, it seems the most reasonable to include a group of cities – the provincial capitals. However, this group is also diverse. The analysis held in the article - made basing on the direct interviews carried out among the Szczecin economic entities confirms the thesis of the need to strengthen, especially by the municipal authorities, the city's development through carefully designed and detailed development strategies, development of human capital and social capital (particularly in relation to the activities of local governments), strengthening of technical infrastructure, establishing contacts with foreign investors along with putting emphasis on the historical and cultural traditions of the city. The objectives pointed can be pursued more effectively with the support of the lower initiatives, especially the creative class.
