The participation of the Greek consular representatives in public life of the Southern Ukraine (XIX – early XX century)

Abstract

The role of Greek consuls representatives in the public life of Southern Ukraine – Odessa, Mykolayiv, Feodosia and Berdyansk during XIX – early XX century is analyzed in this article. The author focuses on the activities of the Greek consul general in Odessa merchant I. Vuchyna, who was a gifted man multi-task and made a contribution to science. A well-known diplomat in Southern Russia was the Greek consul in Mykolayiv G.P. Zihomala which devoted considerable attention to the development and welfare of the Greek community, which at that time occupied a very prominent among the residents of Mykolayiv. It is also the Greek consul in Feodosia D. Kostov and the Greek consul in Berdyansk M. Paykos. Taking care of the interests of their own states and citizens, they both contributed to the development of a trade, business, raising banks and hospitals of the city, the significant contribution made to the development of education, newspaper business, science, art, sports, education, spiritual lives and in the development of Southern cities
