The peculiarities of the use of verbs in the song discourse

Abstract

The song discourse is a peculiar form of the retention of cultural knowledge, a reflection of people’s lives – their basic values, ethical attitudes, social representations, stereotypes, patterns of behavior, cultural norms passed from generation to generation. In this work the song discourse is understood as a generic concept in relation to the texts of English songs, which is characterized by specific linguistic peculiarities and reflects the “possible world” of representatives of the younger generation of English-speaking countries. The song discourse is realized in two models of the chronotope: 1) mediated, in which time and place the artist's performance is not specified (the songs are represented using information technologies); 2) direct (the songs are represented by a concert in or outside the room). Participants in song discourse are traditionally the performers of the song, its authors (this may be the same person), the listeners. All participants have status-role and age differences. As a rule, the performer, who is older than the listener has a higher social status in society. The main goals of the song discourse are to convey to the listener the main thoughts, intentions, ideas of the author of the song, to provide an emotional influence on the listener and to form his or her social position and value orientation. Values displayed in songs can be varied: peace, friendship, love, attention, kindness, beauty, freedom, dignity etc. Under the defining features of the song as a cultural phenomenon, the structural and formal simplicity that is achieved through various repetitions and new perspectives for the real life while maintaining the traditional range of problems in the field of society's attention are most often considered.
