Journal Title: Психологічні перспективи - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 29

Abstract

The article provides a theoretical analysis of the social anxiety phenomenon. It reveals the nature and significance of this phenomenon in student age and its relationship with the problem of personality social adaptation, the problem of formation of personal qualities and self-esteem and students’ self-attitude. The purpose of this article is to explore the phenomenon of social anxiety as scientific problem among individuals enrolled in higher educational institutions. Objectives of the study are: 1) analytical review of studies on social anxiety among students; 2) theoretical justification of the concept of social anxiety among students; 3) the generalization and understanding of students’ social anxiety. In the course of writing the article we used the following theoretical methods: synthesis, analysis, generalization, systematization. It was determined that positive social interaction with the environment is not only the key to the sense of psychological comfort, but also the success of training. It is proved that students suffering from social anxiety are more prone to low self-estimatimation and to fear to speak in front of a group, responding during seminars or practical training. Fear to answer before the examiner, due to social anxiety, may lead to stupor, and as a result, the negative evaluation of the student’s knowledge because of his inability to demonstrate knowledge. It is proved that social anxiety is a reaction of anxiety in situations of social interaction. It is more difficult to establish close relationships with other people for individuals with social anxiety, they feel insecure when dealing with the opposite sex, have a poor sexual experience. It was determined that individuals who suffer from social anxiety tend to view any social environment as hostile, negatively configured, and to interpret the neutral response as critical. Main models of social anxiety were analyzed, among them the greatest distribution has gained to interpersonal model. In this model, social anxiety is explained through the prism of the social skills lack and low self-esteem. Prospects for further research are the empirical study of psychological characteristics of individuals suffering from social anxiety and the development of correctional programs.Key words: social anxiety, social phobia, anxiety, student, social environment, relationships.
