THE PILOT STUDY OF THE SIBLING SYMPTOM COMPLEX AS A FACTOR OF NEUROTIC DISORDERS

Abstract

In modern psychological literature there is not enough information about the impact of personality traits caused by siblings position on the neurotic states. In this regard, there is need for scientific justification for this effect. The purpose of the article to analyze the results of the pilot study of the sibling symptom group as a factor of neurotic disorders. The type of siblingposition forms a special complex of personality traits — sibling symptom complex. Neurotic states occurs when these subindividual system of personality traits is rigid and cannot adapt to the environment. The pilot test shows the significant effect of sibling positions on the level of neurotic states. The author gives description of different structures of sibling symptom complex, which predispose different neurotic states. The highest level of hysterical type of response and vegetative disorders have the oldest sisters of brothers and the highest level of the neurotic depression have the oldest brothers of sisters. Special focus is made on the structure of individual traits that increase the level of neurotic states and compensate them. Among the personal characteristics that contribute to the level of neurotic syndromes — low self-esteem, suspicion, low aggression, altruism, authoritarianism. Among the characteristics that compensate, reduce neurotic symptoms — high normative behavior (morality), selfishness, abstract thinking, leadership, a high level of self-control. The article provides some solutions about the improvement of methodological foundations of the study: 1) to research the vertical — horizontal links between the individual traits,2) to form the sample with the criteria of inclusion — exclusion of subjects, 3) to check the influence of parent*s sibling positions, age period and marital status of subjects on sibling symptom complex, 4) to adapt the English version of The Brother-Sister Questionnaire (S. A. Graham-Bermann, S. E. Culter).
