Journal Title: Journal of Animal Science Advances - Year 2011, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

The present studies on Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) in Bandırma Sheep Research Station (BSRS) have been reviewed. The conservation and sustainability of farm animal genetic diversity in Turkey is essential for sustainable animal production, rural development and food security. General Directorate of Agricultural Research (GDAR) has conducted programs on the conservation of AnGR since 1992 year and the project of Conservation of Domestic Animal Genetic Resources started in 1995 year in the several institutions. BSRS has taken over all responsibility at six breed’s level the conservation program. In the BSRS, conservation and characterization program have been carried out in four sheep (Gökçeada, Sakız, Kıvırcık and Çine Çaparı), one cattle (Turkish Grey), and one (Anatolian Water Buffalo) breeds. These studies have been analysed by using some experimental results including different applications and founds in literature. The activities on conservation, characterization and sustainability of the AnGR in BSRS and needs and challenges were assessed in the context of Farm Animal Genetic Resources.
