The Principles of the Spatial Time Organization of the Contemporary German Autobiographical Literature

Abstract

The study tested the peculiarities of chronotope of the autobiographical novels. The special attention is paid to the specificity of spatial time continuum of modern German autobiography. The analysis is based on Günter Grass’s autobiography: «Peeling the Onion». Among the main principles of spatial time organization in this novel are singled out the text fragmentariness, inconsistent associative change of places of events, the play with forms of past and present times. The role of autobiographical memory is singled out during the description of time and place of an event. Also the specificity of the term «the fourth time» is studied as the literary method of transmission of march of events and comparison of different time conditions. Movement in time and space occurs on the basis of associations, when one memory causes another. The transition from one scene to another is quite sharp even within one chapter. The game over time allows sudden or unmotivated transitions between episodes. From one scene depicting the life of the hero, there is a transfer to earlier or future events. The text of G. Grass’s autobiography is between different time and spatial levels, the past and the present go side by side and cause the author different, often oppositely marked thoughts and feelings. The specificity of the spatial and temporal organization of G. Grass’s autobiographical prose was identified in the fragmentary realization of all autobiographical text, where transitions between the scene situations are described without a clear logical connection, on the basis of associations with past or future events, which allows us to speak of the use of editing techniques in Grass’s autobiographical text. Autobiographical memory is also reflected in the space-time continuum, it is its specificity that explains the violation of the temporal and logical sequence
