THE REFLECTION OF ORŞOVA CITY`S EVOLUTION IN CARTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS

Abstract
The paper envisages a long term analysis of the urban development of Orşova city which was dated back to the early Neolithic period based on archaeological explorations. Orşova`s representation on cartographic documents as a permanent settlement was linked to the Roman period. After a long absence of cartographic information during the migration period, it reappeared on the maps created during the Hungarian, Ottoman and Habsburg dominations from the 15th-19th centuries. Thus, the series of maps and plans which were created in different countries also enable the spatial monitoring of the city`s evolution from the outset of the 15th century up to present times.
