THE RELATION BETWEEN THE ATTITUDES OF TEACHER CANDIDATES TOWARDS CURSIVE HANDWRITING AND THEIR LEARNING MODALITY

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2014, Vol 7, Issue 31

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between the attitudes of primary school teacher candidates towards cursive handwriting and their learning modalities. In the study, relational screening model has been used. The sample of the study consists of 705 teacher candidates who are second, third and fourth year students studying in the Department of Primary School Education of four different universities in Turkey and who have taken the writing techniques course. The data for the study has been collected via the “Attitude Scale towards Cursive Handwriting” developed by the researcher to explore the attitudes of teacher candidates towards cursive handwriting and via “BIG 16 Learning Modality Inventory” developed by Şimşek (2002) to explore their learning styles. In analyzing the data, frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, t-test, one-way- ANOVA and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient have been computed by means of SPSS 16.0 statistical analysis program. The results of the study reveal a significantly weak correlation between the attitudes of teacher candidates towards cursive handwriting and their learning modality.
