Abstract

This study aims at examining the relationship between authoritarian and participatory leadership styles of the principals of secondary schools in Shiraz and teachers’ sob satisfaction. The study is a descriptive one considered as a survey research and is categorized under applied research. The population consists of all secondary schools in Shiraz which 60 schools were selected randomly as the sample of the study, and data was collected from 60 principals and 60 teachers from selected secondary schools. To collect the data, Luthans leadership style questionnaire consisting of 35 questions based on two criteria of leadership and participation styles in the Likert scale for the principals and job satisfaction questionnaire of Smith, Kendall and Hulin (1969) for measuring teachers’ job satisfaction were used, respectively. Information collected through software were first tested using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to determine the normality of the data and then the Pearson correlation coefficient test was used, finally to predict teachers’ job satisfaction stepwise regression was used. The results showed that all of the participants in the studied sample followed a normal distribution. There was a direct relationship between principals’ leadership styles and secondary school teachers’ job satisfactions. More specifically, a middle relationship was found between principals’ authoritative leadership styles and teachers’ job satisfaction, and a direct and strong relationship was determined between principals’ participatory leadership styles and teachers’ job satisfaction. Furthermore, the observed coefficient of determination showed that the communication skills and the principals’ leadership styles explained 0.56 changes in the teachers’ job satisfaction of secondary schools in Shiraz. Thus, by choosing the appropriate leadership style, we can increase the amount of impact and influence on the teachers.
