THE ROLE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MEDIA IN THE PROMOTION OF HEALTHY LIVING: Sleeplessness of older people in Europe

Abstract
Various medical statistics indicate that sleep disorders affect a growing number of people in the world. They undoubtedly affect the quality of life and the functioning of the people suffering from it. However, little is known about the social context in which sleep disorders appear. The present article is a sociological analysis of the phenomenon of insomnia in older population. It is an approach which differs from a medical one, concentrated on diagnosis and treatment. Its aim is to show experienced disorders in the social context i.e., relating them to the social position, the quality of life, the frame of mind, the health evaluation, and the social functioning of seniors. The subject of further analyses will be the occurrence of sleeplessness in different European countries among elderly and also looking for similarities and dissimilarities in its social correlates.<br/><br/>
