The role of nutrition education in the population of children and adolescents

Abstract

Introduction: Nutrition education involves systematic dissemination of knowledge of food and nutrition based on up-to-date and checked results of scientific studies. Its aim is to acquire knowledge of the principles of proper nutrition, to develop nutrition choices, abilities, beliefs and attitudes necessary to maintain and improve own and other people’s health. Purpose of the study: The purpose of the study was to define the significance of nutrition education in the population at developmental age, and to indicate the individuals responsible for forming the eating habits in children and adolescents. Description of the state of knowledge: The role of nutrition education is to initiate pro- health behaviours. The scope of education comprises disseminating knowledge of the principles of proper nutritional habits, teaching the capabilities of planning the menus, preparing meals, and storing groceries. It is indispensible to acquire specific skills to be able not only to know the principles of adequate nutrition, but to perform specific activities, such as plan a menu and prepare well-balanced meals. Due to education in nutrition, the consumer’s skills are developed, e.g., the habit of reading the information on the labels of products. Conclusion: Nutrition education should be approached as a long-term investment in social health. Therefore, multilevel activities are indicated, starting from the family, via nurseries, school with the participation of children and teachers, as well as health care staff, i.e. physician, nurse, dietician, psychologist, and mass media.Key words: nutrition education, adequate nutrition, children and adolescents
