The role of significant people in supporting the development of sporting talents

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 50, Issue 8

Abstract

The article is devoted to the role of significant people in supporting the development of sporting talents. Participants were 11 Olympic medal winners (seven men and four women; M age = 30.63), representing individual sports. A structured interview, a questionnaire on the retrospective assessment of parental attitudes (KPR-Roc) and a questionnaire on the role of the family environment (KŚRS) were used in the study. Analysis of descriptions of family relationships distinguished three positive categories: a feeling of mutual understanding, positive atmosphere and certainty about the possibility to use parental support. All the participants considered a least one of their coaches as a significant person, and seven people named their parents as significant people. Significant people are the source of different types of support – most often emotional and tangible support. Good interpersonal relationships in the family predominate among the family environment factors. The participants value mutual support, understanding, deriving pleasure from the time spent together and experiencing successes and failures together. Analysis of the findings concerning parental attitudes revealed that the participants assessed their mother's and their father's attitudes in a similar way. A strong feeling of independence and acceptance predominates in their assessment.
