THE ROLE OF SPIRITUALITY IN PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH CHRONIC SOMATIC DISEASES

Abstract

Purpose. The aim of the study was to determine the role of spirituality in posttraumatic growth in people who are struggling with chronic somatic diseases. Method. Data from 90 people suffering from cancer, cardiovascular and chronic renal failure were analyzed. 55,5% were men and 44,5% female. The age of respondents was 26-90 years (M=55,6, SD=15,4). Posttraumatic Growth Inventory for assessing the positive effects of experienced trauma and Self-description Questionnaire to measure spirituality were used in the study. Results. Over 40% of respondents displayed high level of posttraumatic growth. Spirituality is positively associated with the presence of posttraumatic changes, especially in self-perception, relations with others and spiritual sphere. Conclusions. Amongst different aspects of spirituality ethical sensitivity and harmony play major role in posttraumatic growth than religiousness
