THE ROLE OF SPORTS MEDICINE IN MODERN SPORT

Abstract

The main objective of sports medicine as a medical specialization is to analize positive and negative influences of physical activity and sport on human body. Sports medicine promotes exercise as a dominant positive health factor, organize adequate health coverage for all exercise and sport participants, controll usage of doping substances and organize, educate and connect subjects who are interested in sport. Preservation of health status through prevention, therapy and rehabilitation of injuries and diseases and improvement of psycho-physical abilities important for good competitive performance are just few of theaims of sports medicine. Convincing evidence of the cardiovascular benefits of physical activity have been demonstrated in large epidemiological studies and systematic overviews. Dynamic development of sports medicine in past few decades shows neccesity of science view in recreative, amateur and professional sport. Today, sports medicine has evolved into a respected discipline with dedicated associations, colleges, institutes and literature in most countries.
