The Safety of Maritime Transport in the Baltic Sea Region

Abstract

The Baltic Sea is a unique ecosystem. Because of its geographical and oceanographic properties it is very sensitive to the environmental impact of human activity. Moreover, the huge traffic across the Baltic Sea is observed (15% of global transport). According to the traffic, 1-3 major accidents are expected in the Baltic Sea, but there has not been any one yet. There were happened more than a thousand incidents and small accidents in the Baltic Sea the last decade, and collisions and groundings were the main causes of them. The legal, organising, scientific and technical tools have been developed for increase the safety of the Baltic Sea transport. Some strategies in prevention of environmental threats are presented in this paper.
