THE SCALES OF MEASUREMENTS IN PEDAGOGICAL RESEARCH

Abstract
Abstract/ The purpose of the article is the formation of an exhaustive definition of the scales used in various spheres of human activity, and, in particular, in pedagogical research. Also, the purpose of the article is determining the types of classification and examples demonstration of the application of scales different types of teaching technology in higher education. In previous publications, we substantiated the need for the mathematical statistics using in scientific and pedagogical research and, in particular, in teaching technology in higher education. We considered essences of the sampling method and method of the organization of selective research on the initial stage of scientific and pedagogical research. The analysis of the approaches of different authors to the definition of the scale of measurements and their classifications pointed contradictions that should be avoided when determining scales. First, in avoiding a situation where different scales or different elements of the same scale are matched to one and the same object, it needs to discuss a clearly defined property of real objects, which should be revealed in the scales name. Secondly, the types of analyzed properties should be determined by the researcher due to his experience, sensation, devices, etc. And only after that value or types of properties need to be placed in the mutual correspondence of their formalized image, a.g. the discrete set with definite operations or numeric axis. The scale of the investigated property (indicator, attributes) is a formalized image of the types (values) of this property, which are determined by the researcher. The article describes the algorithm for finding the scale required for a particular pedagogical study.Such a scale of properties, united in one kind in this way of formalization as a set of possible mathematical operations, can be recognized a Stevens scale. Authors considered the main types of scales are used in various fields of human activity and authors given examples of their application.This should encourage higher education teachers to acquire the knowledge and understanding of measurements in pedagogical research, to obtain skills to apply it, will allow teachers with the accuracy and reliability to analyze information, effectively apply acquired knowledge and skills in educational process in higher education.
