THE SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE OF LOCAL POLITICIANS: A RESEARCH ON THE DAILY USAGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA BY METROPOLITAN MAYORS

Abstract

The stunning developments in information and communication technology in recent years have not just made changes in communication among people but also in many fields. With refreshment and variation at the facilities to access internet, individuals have gained a quality to believe whatever they’ve heard, require more than they know and search more for this, question and suspect. People have had an opportunity to response to the event in an agenda or what’s going around them in seconds with a new kind of media as a social media which includes features different from traditional mass communication devices. Not only individuals but also institutions and organizations had to respond to the new kind of media platform at this process. Communication, telecommunication, participation, organization, sharing are the popular terms which are explained with their new features by associating with the social media. Social media are subject to many researches in a national and an international scale with this and similar features concerning to communication, public relations, journalism, politics, marketing, even security. However, these kinds of studies are very new. For this reason, increasing at knowledge accumulation about the subject involves an academic value as it also means increasing about the importance, features and results of social media. In this study built on such an interest, the level of daily usage of social media by metropolitan mayors, who are in touch with the public with the reason of their way of working as well as their jobs and responsibilities have been discussed and for which reasons social media is used have been studied to be determined. In accordance with this specified purpose, as a result of the study in which content analysis method has been used, it has been shown that İ. Melih Gökçek is the president, who uses social media most effectively among Metropolitan Mayors; in addition, social media is used more with the aim of announcing institutional events to the followers by presidents.
