The statehood activity of Mykola Skrypnyk in the 1920-ies

Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

The article analyses the statehood, cultural and educational activity of Ukrainian national Bolshevik Mykola Skrypnyk. He is described as a participant of Ukrainian Bolshevik government activities and a person connected with the creation of the CP(b)U. Separate parts of the article are devoted to his contribution as a People’s Commissar for Education in 1927-1933. The fate of this vibrant and dubious person closely combines two concepts: individual tragedy and the tragedy of the era. He belonged to that rapid time that absorbed the heroism and drama of the revolution and the creation of a new society, the greatness of ups and the shame of downs, triumph of victories and bitterness of defeats. Devotion to the interests of Bolshevik party (as he understood them) marked by difficult and painful search of the most effective ways to solve a complex social and economic, political and cultural issues during his 35-year membership in it, fully characterizes the life of M. Skrypnyk. His outlook and willpower were formed in terms of uncompromising struggle. But unfortunately, he did not understand the aspiration of the Ukrainian people to national self-determination caused by revolution. And in the battle of two opposing sides he remained faithful to his beliefs supporting the interests of Bolshevik party. Being a faithful Leninist, Skrypnyk proved himself to be a Ukrainian Soviet statesman as well as an ideologist of Ukrainization in 1920. M. Skrypnyk had also to work on building a new political system of the state of «dictatorship of the proletariat» and the work on «Ukrainization» in circumstances when it was increasingly loosing its previous social and political direction and was turning into a cover of a totalitarian coup. Beyond any doubt M. Skrypnyk sincerely fought for Ukrainianization, but understood it as communist national policy.
