The tactics of 50 km walk during World Championships and Olympic Games

Journal Title: Rozprawy Naukowe Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu - Year 2007, Vol 25, Issue 1

Abstract

The paper attempts to define the playing-out tactics of walk over the distance of 50 km at the world competitions by analyzing intermediate times over 5 km distances. Intermediate times reached by the finalists of World Championships in Sevilla and Edmonton as well as Olympic Games in Sydney and Athens (only the golden medalist) were analysed. The results of the analysis demonstrate that the speed of covering consecutive 5 km sections increased up to the eighth section, that is, up to 40 km and the last two sections were covered at a slower rate and did not have any significant effect on the change in final classification. It was also pointed out that the mental endurance plays a very important role. It is related to the close performance level of competitors who matter in the rivalry. On the basis of the results presented and tendencies existing in the present athletics, the authors expect that during the forthcoming Olympic Games in Peking the distance to be covered will be shortened down to 45 km.
