The technique of reconstruction the settlements fortifications of X–XVI centuries in the Middle Volga

Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2015, Vol 3, Issue 13

Abstract

The article deals with archaeological data on defensive structures of medieval hill forts in the periods of Volga Bulgaria, the Golden Horde and the Kazan Khanate. On the basis of archaeological research results, an attempt is made to determine the original look of medieval defensive structures situated in the Middle Volga region. Reconstruction technique for different types of medieval fortifications is offered. As an example, excavation materials from 11 hill forts of 10-16th cc. are cited. The peculiarities of each of them and available analogies are discussed. Technological methods of medieval fortification construction are analyzed. These include various types of wooden and earth structures as well as numerous ramparts made solely from earth. In order to reconstruct the latter, data on ground composition should be taken into account, which could be instrumental in defining their original shape and size. Research results make it possible to single out certain regularities in the structure of basic and additional fortifications. However, not all of the defensive works in a single line could be identical. Their peculiarities depended on the presence or absence of terrain protective properties.
