Abstract
In time of summer heat the temperature of road surface chemise can exceed bitum softening point. In this case cargo vehicles’ intensive current traffic results in road’s tearing away and rutting. During cold time the road surface temperature can be lower than bitumen brittleness point causing distress distortion and pothole making in bituminous concrete. The adequate regulating of cargo vehicles’ traffic calls for road surface chemise temperature determination and control. Minimal and maximal road surface chemise temperature rates have been established according to previously developed methods and meteorological data. The dependence of monthly minimal and maximum air temperatures from minimal and maximum road surface temperatures is presented as simple equations. By plugging brittleness and softening points for road bitums of different trade marks in these equations the highest summer and the lowest winter air temperature rates that allow keeping road surface chemise temperature within safe range of bituminous concrete operation have been determined. The calculations have proved that the traditional cargo vehicles’ traffic limitations at air temperature of +28ºС meets the standards for oil bitumens with some approximation. Cargo vehicles’ intensive traffic may be allowed at +30ºС for polymerized bitums of higher quality. Apart from that, there should be the traffic limitation at cold temperatures in order to avoid distress distortion in bituminous concrete road surface chemise.
