THE THEME OF CHIVALRY AND THE IMAGES OF KNIGHTS IN THE WORK OF N. S. GUMILEV

Abstract
The theme of Chivalry appears in N. Gumilev’s creativity very early. It is presented already in the collection «The Way of Konkvistador», accurately designated in the poems «The Knight of Happiness» and «Rhodes». Gumilev’s «Knight of Happiness» is opposite to «The Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance» from Cervantes’s novel «The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha». The Symbolists are more likely to be called the Knights of the Sorrowful Countenance, because of their appeal to «cosmic sadness» and, sometimes, denial of the world created by God. The Symbolists show the aspiration to escape from the earthly life (material) to spiritual being, even by the price of death.
