Journal Title: «Вчені записки Таврійського національного університету імені В. І. Вернадського. Серія: Філологія. Соціальні комунікації» - Year 2017, Vol 28, Issue 2
Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of N. Gumilev’s “African” poem in its correlation with the heroic poetry. Literature of the late XIX – early XX century is characterized by the dominance of lyrical genres, while Gumilev’s works are remarkable for a strong attraction to epic. “Mick” was written after the trip to Africa and, according to the poet’s intention, was to become the embodiment of his views on the heroic poetry. The poem reveals a number of references to general epic motives – such as the friendship of two heroes, labours and the descent to the afterworld. In addition, the poem is distinguished by a complex synthesis of African beliefs, adventure literature, Christian mythology and references to another Gumilev’s works.
