“AT THE OPPOSITE END OF THE STETHOSCOPE”: THE “PHYSICIAN – PATIENT” DICHOTOMY AND ITS DECONSTRUCTION IN THE MODERN LITERARY AND MEDICAL DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article deals with the features of narrative representation of the physician and patient in the novels by the modern Canadian-American writer Peter Clement. The stereotyped narrative roles in the literary and medical discourse, as well as the ways of transforming the traditional “physician – patient” dichotomy in the 21st century prose have been considered. The author deliberately resorted to deconstructing the established relationships by introducing such narrative roles as “the physician as a patient” and “the physician as a member of patient’s family”. As a result, the narrative strategies of the physician and the patient acquire new effect and meaning. In this way, the author seeks to reconsider the institutional roles in the clinical setting and get closer to understanding the patient as the Other, placing the physician “at the opposite end of the stethoscope”.
