FUNCTION OF LITERARY PARADOX IN ENGLISH AESTHETICISM (BASED ON THE WORKS BY O. WILDE)

Abstract
The article focuses on the main peculiarities of aestheticism reflected in the works by O. Wilde who is considered to be the founder of this artistic movement. One of the main stylistic devices utilized by the author is paradox, which owing to its ambivalent nature can precisely disclose principal aesthetic ideas. Oppositions between art and life, beauty and morality build up the core of both literary works and essays by O. Wilde. Usage of paradox on different text levels enables the author to declare his aesthetic principles in a variety of ways which adds up to the value of his critical essays. Thus, the research is aimed to analyze the specifics of paradoxical statements functioning in the works by O. Wilde, that belong to different genres.
