THE USABILITY OF ANABOLIC-CATABOLIC INDEX IN ASSESSMENT OF ICE HOCKEY PLAYERS' PERFORMANCE
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. The aim of the study was to assess the usability of testosterone-to-cortisol (T/C) ratio in modifying individual training programsMateriał and methods. The research involved 16 ice hockey players during the direct training in the preparation and competition period. Two series of tests were performed: the refusal test and after 21 days the 6-minute critical power test (the power determined during threshold test), the subjects had the-ir blood sampled before and after each test. Serum cortisol and testosterone concentrations were determined using radioimmunoassay (RIA) method.Results. The average total work performed by ice hockey players in the refusal test was 3228.2 ±500.2 J/kg and in the 6-minute critical power test was 1419.6±163.3 J/kg. The average hormone concentrations in the first series before the exercise were: corrected cortisol - 395.0±148.8 nmol/l, testosterone- 21.5±8.6 nmol/l and after the exercise: 489.5±160.4 nmol/l and 18.0+5.7 nmol/l, respectively The average percentage change in T/C ratio was 17.03. The training program was modified based on the in-dMdual results of 10 players. In the second series, corrected cortisol concentration before the exercise was 390.5±206.4 nmol/l and testosterone concentration was 13.73+4.55 nmol/l. After the exercise test these values were 502.1+157.3 nmol/l and 19.2+5.5 nmol/l, respectively The average percentage change in T/C ratio was 17.19.Conclusions. Acceptance threshold of anabolic-catabolic index as 30% change to individual training program modification in ice hockey players isjustified.
