THE USAGE OF TESTS IN THE PROCESS OF ASSESSMENT OF FUTURE PILOTSʼ KNOWLEDGE OF PROFESSIONALLY ORIENTED ENGLISH

Abstract

In the given article the advisability of test usage in the process of assessment of future pilotsʼ knowledge of professionally oriented English has been proved. The term "test" was first introduced into scientific use by the American psychologist James Kettel in 1890. He worked out the new methods of capabilitiesʼ diagnostics − tests that he named mental. Under a test we understand the standardized, often limited in time testing intended to define quantitative and qualitative individual psychological features. As a rule, under standardization we understand uniformity of the procedure of test administration and test results assessment. Testing of future pilots has a number of advantages: possibility to test a great number of students (all group or course) using the same material and conditions of testing procedure; saving classroom time that is very important in nonlinguistic higher educational establishments where time on language study is limited; focusing on the modern educational facilities and use of the computer educational and supervisory systems; an increase of objectivity of pedagogical control, minimization of human factor in the process of test results evaluation. On the modern stage it is recommended to conduct testing with the use of computers. Computers substantially extend possibilities of individualization of studies and activation of studentsʼ cognitive activity in the process of learning a foreign language, the usage of computers allows to adapt the process of studying to the studentsʼ individual features. Every student gets a possibility to work in the rhythm, i.e. choosing for himself a volume and speed of mastering the material. The most common types of tasks for testing future pilotsʼ vocabulary are the following: fill in the gaps, find synonyms and antonyms, multiple choice, describe pictures using the given vocabulary units, do a crossword, continue a dialogue, complete the given sentences, comment on the given situation, express an opinion on the given topic, guess a word, put the words into a logical order. For testing grammar the following tasks can be used: fill in the gaps, do a crossword, choose a correct modal verb, put the sentences into the right order, use the correct preposition or article, make up sentences using the table, make the questions for the given sentences, complete the sentences, make negative sentences, comment on the actions, etc. In the process of testing future pilotsʼ speaking skills the following types of tasks are recommended: translate a sentence into a foreign language, make up a story from the given words, listen to a sentence in a native language and convey its meaning in a foreign language, combine 2 sentences into one, change an underlined word in a sentence using its equivalent, choose an adequate translation of a given sentence, correct mistakes in a given text, make up questions to a given affirmative sentence, etc. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that tests allow to check only limited knowledge and can not fully replace other forms of evaluation and control, although they give many new possibilities to a teacher. There are many requirements to test compliance if we want to get the adequate evaluation of future pilotsʼ knowledge of the professionally oriented English.
