The Use of Proverbs, Idioms and Formulaic Expressions in Teaching Turkish to Foreigners: A New Istanbul Turkish Book For International Students (A1 and A2)

Abstract

This study was carried out to analyze the situation of proverbs, idioms and formulaic expressions which are the most important tools of cultural transfer and daily communication in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In the books prepared for Turkish learners, the levels, units, distribution of the proverbs, idioms and formulaic expressions in the textbook and workbooks, and the most used idioms and formulaic expressions were examined. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. While the universe of the research consists of all the textbooks and workbooks prepared for learners of Turkish as a foreign language, the sample consists of the New Istanbul Turkish for International Students A1- A2 textbooks and workbooks. The dictionary of Proverbs and Idioms of the Turkish Language Institution was used in the examination of proverbs and idioms, and the frequency and percentage distributions according to their numbers were presented in tables by examining the proverbs and idioms included in reading, listening/watching, grammar and activities in the textbook and workbook. As a result of the research, 2 proverbs were found at A1 and A2 levels. It has been determined that a total of 228 idiom and formulaic expressions are included in 167 textbooks and 61workbooks at A1 level, and a total of 350 idioms and formulaic expressions in 230 textbooks and 120 workbooks at A2 level. It has been observed that the phrases “ziyaret etmek” (make a visit), “hoş geldin” (welcome) and “merhaba” (hello), “teşekkürler/ teşekkür ederim” (thanks/thank you), “nasılsın?” (How are you?), “buyurun”, “memnun oldum” nice to meet you) are mostly used at both levels. As a result of the research, it has been concluded that the number of idioms and formulaic expressions is used more in the textbooks at both levels, more idioms and formulaic expressions are included at the A2 level than at the A1 level, and there are differences in the distribution of the number of idioms and formulaic expressions according to the units.
