The use of supplements in the diet of young men practising and not practising sports.

Abstract

The aim of the paper was to assess the frequency of occurrence of selected easily available performance enhancing agents among first year students of the Faculty of Physical Education at the Academy of Sports of Physical Education. The control group consisted of young men of the same age, who were candidates for military service. The results were compared to find the factors motivating the use of supplements.The sample comprised a group of 72 males aged 18-19, who were first year students of the Academy of Sports of Physical Education practicing at least one sport discipline and a group of 300 young men of the some age (candidates for army service) with different attitudes towards physical activity. The survey was performed using the questionnaire on the use of dietary supplements, and the subject's motivation for that.The results indicate that the frequency of using supplements was similar in both groups and did not exceed 5%. Among the factors motivating the use of supplements the subjects most frequently mentioned the desire to obtain better sports results, improvingt their appearance, body building, ability to lift heavy weights and physical fitness. The statistically significant between group difterences concerned the desire to achieve better results in sport, physical appearance and improvement of physical ability1. Frequency of using dietary supplements was similar in both groups of young men. 2. The statistically significant be tween group differences were found with respect to motivation for usage of supplements.
