The Use of Water Quality Index Method to Determine the Potability of Surface Water and Groundwater in the Vicinity of a Municipal Solid Waste Dumpsite in Nigeria.

Journal Title: American journal of Engineering Research - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 10

Abstract

The quality of the groundwater and surface water bodies close to the location of the major dumpsite being used for disposing the municipal solid waste produced by residents of Ado Ekiti, Nigeria was determined. In contrast to the common method of comparing measured values of the physico-chemical and biological properties of water with standard values, a water quality index (WQI) method was used to classify the water. Analysis of the water samples using the WQI method indicated that the quality of both the groundwater and surface water poor owing to the high content of lead in them. It was concluded that the WQI method is a very effective tool for determining the quality of water susceptible to leachate pollution and communicating it in an unambiguous manner to the stakeholders in the water industry.
