The use of zirconia in prosthetic dentistry

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 2

Abstract

Trends to eliminate metal from the aesthetic restorations have been observed for many years. During almost two decades the ceramic structures for veneering with porcelain were made from alumina that is displaced by zirconia now. Properly made structure from zirconia has good aestetic features and appropriate strenght. Therefore zirconia is sometimes optimistically named “white gold”. The aim of the paper was presenting the theory and practical aspects of making the prosthetic restorations from zirconia and describing the clinical assesment of the restorations that have been made for treated patients. Following restorations (127) were made by the authors: 28 full-ceramic crowns, 10 full-ceramic bridges, 3 post-and-cores, 48 screw-retained crowns from implant level, 20 screw-retained bridges from implant level, 8 custom abutments for cement-retained crowns. The only one complication that has been observed was crack of three screw-retained bridges, one screw-retained crown and one cement-retained crown. Therefore - according to contemporary knowledge and clinical observations - zirconia restorations seem to be secure method for making functional and aesthetic restorations for teeth and implants.
