The values of blind teenagers in social and linguistic aspects

Abstract
This article discusses the relationships between vision disturbances and the hierarchy of values in blind teenagers, analysing the matter from a social and linguistic perspective. The purpose of this article is to provide an answer to the question: what values do blind teenagers declare to be the most valued, what is the justification for those preferences and how do they understand the names of the values they provide. Results of a diagnostic interview carried out at the Special Purpose School and Education Center in Laski among secondary school and high school students are used as the base for the analysis. Analysing the research material brings the conclusion that there is a high level of axiological competence in blind teenagers and outlines a positive image of the world of studied values. Blind teenagers also cherish affiliative values, values related to selfdevelopment, overcoming obstacles and attaining the set goal. In the linguistic aspect the mental constructs of the values defined fit in with dictionary definitions but also reveal important features of the respondents, which are key for their perception of a particular notion. A verification of the research hypothesis brings about a partial conviction of the impact disability has on the value hierarchy of the blind.
